balanced worship: need new songs?

hey y’all. yesterday i posted a question on my personal blog:

looking at the growing pool of contemporary praise and worship songs (this means excluding the vast sea of hymns that we might still use), what topics do you think the Church could use? what topics are missing from that pool of contemporary praise and worship songs?

what do we need current Christian songwriters to write about? what truths/experiences/emotions/etc. are we leaving out?

Here are some of their answers:
the wrath/justice of God
transparency and humility (like some of David’s confessional psalms)
fear of God
study & spiritual disciplines for believers
praise through uncertainty
honor/respect/fear of the Lord (more reverent songs)
Great Commission
laments/repentance
the Resurrection
objective songs: less about “me” & more about Him

so, looking at this EXTENSIVE list, i thought we could talk through some of these topics. spend a post on “the Resurrection” and throw some songs into the pile that hit on this. then do a post on the “wrath/justice of God” and you guys give suggestions of songs that might hit this topic… etc etc etc.

LET’S START HERE: what TOPICS would YOU add to this list?

after compiling topics, i’ll start a new post hitting one or two of these needs.

one thing i value about this worship leading community is that i’ve learned SO much from y’all! looking forward to your input again!

  2. the best place to look is at the psalms. the range of emotion and topic there is really what we need as a church.

    healing
    confession
    the cross
    he is risen
    his blessings
    the word
    facedown type of submission
    reflective
    reflecting the heavens
    sacramental worship
    pray of our action
    Micah 6:8 type songs
    Revive us songs

    simple few word songs
    be still
    peace

  3. Mandy,
I’d add topics about Holiness and the Fear of God … songs about the aspects of God we don’t like to talk about. Joy and I have been talking a lot lately about how people really don’t fear God anymore. All we hear so much about grace, mercy, love, forgiveness.

Of course, I guess it wouldn’t be very pleasing or worshipful to sing songs about God’s wrath and justice … because most of us in the church are sadly living lives, although “under grace” that are so deserving of his wrath and mercy.

Oh well – that’s a soapbox for another blog later this week.

  4. Maybe more stories of faith type songs.

Keep the “to Him” songs but add in the “about Him” and then add in the “what He is doing songs.”

  8. I would say that we need songs how about even leaders have moments when they are unsure of things. We are not meant to be on spiritual pedal stools.

  9. I am a songwriter, and I came across this site and I see that you would like a few songs written, if interested then let me know. My name is LaVell and I have written over 30songs for other artist within 2yrs. Again if interested let me know, you can see some songs I’ve written on my site as well as myspace.com/mandybarry. These songs are not gospel but I have written gospel songs as well. I look forward to hearing from you. GOD BLESS
